dynamics of leaf growth in maize

Abstract

There are very few continuous, or even semicontinuous, measurements of leaf growth recorded. Work of Brouwer (unpublished) has shown the rate of maize leaf emergence to be constant at a given temperature, a relation that holds true for most grasses (Anslow •66). Grobbelaar (•62) showed, by daily measurement of emerging leaves, that leaf length growth rate was linearly related to time and that at any time three visible leaves were growing. Kleinendorst en Brouwer (•69), using a continuous recorder, also showed linear leaf length growth rates under

various conditions.
